	The Dental Simulated Clinical Exercise (DSCE) and the Dental Hygiene Computer Simulated Clinical Exercise (CSCE) are valid and reliable patient-simulated clinical assessments, which maybe utilized for multiple purposes. These uses include:
	· Conditions to disciplinary orders requiring assessment of current knowledge, skills and abilities · Self Assessment · Remediation · Adjuncts to licensure by credentials · Re-entry into active practice · Continuing education for relicensure · Initial licensure assessments
	The DSCE and CSCE are administered at Prometric Testing Centers in the United States and around the world. Once individuals have applied and receive authorization from the American Association of Dental Examiners to take the DSCE or CSCE, the assessment may be scheduled at a convenient test center. Results are confidential and released only at the direction of the examinee only. The DSCE and CSCE assess different levels of mental processes that must be used by examinees in the clinical demonstration of diagnosis and treatment planning. Often, these levels are based on Bloom’s taxonomy which includes the following six levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis synthesis, and evaluation.
	Dental Simulated Clinical Exercise (DSCE)
	The DSCE is divided into three sections: the DOR, CTP, and PPMC. These sections are each designed to assess increasingly more complex levels of knowledge, cognitive abilities, as well as inductive and deductive reasoning skills in a clinical demonstration of diagnosis and treatment planning. Critical clinical conditions and situations commonly presented by patients in the offices of general dental practitioners are simulated by way of computer-enhanced photographs, radiographs (x-rays), optical images of study and working models, laboratory data and other clinical digitized reproductions. The DOR, CTP, or PPMC are also offered individually or in any combination. The DOR (Diagnosis, Oral Medicine and Radiology) section consists of 100 mini-case presentations that include: anatomic identification, abnormalities of bone, soft tissue and teeth, identification of systemic conditions, radiography, physical evaluation, laboratory diagnostics and pharmacotherapeutics. The DOR provides an assessment of the examinee’s knowledge, skills and abilities to recognize clinical conditions and situations commonly encountered in the general practice of dentistry. The CTP (Comprehensive Treatment Planning) section consists of 80 mini-case presentations that include: preventive dentistry, periodontics, systemic diseases/medical emergencies, special care, oral medicine, endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry and oral surgery. The CTP provides an assessment of the examinee’s knowledge, skills and abilities to not only recognize critical and common clinical conditions and situations encountered in the general practice of dentistry, but also to apply the appropriate treatment options required for treating the clinical condition or situation depicted in single-issue simulations. The PPMC (Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Medical Considerations) section consists of the presentation of the complete record of actual patients in a manner that permits the examinee tochoose which information the examinee determines is necessary to diagnose and treatment plan the specific patient presented. The patient records include the patient’s health history, periodontal probing chart, full mouth intra-oral photographs of the dentition and radiographs (x-rays). The PPMC consists of 100 queries on clinical findings, differential diagnosis, potential problems concerning medical considerations and infection control, preferred sequence in treatment, and alternative treatment plans and procedures. The PPMC provides an assessment of the examinee’s knowledge, skills and abilities to recognize critical clinical conditions and situations encountered commonly in the general practice of dentistry and the application of the appropriate treatment options required in a more integrated fashion than in the CTP section.
	Dental Hygiene Computer Simulated Clinical Exercise (CSCE)
	The CSCE consists of 100 mini-case presentations that include: health assessment and medical emergencies, radiology, infection control, disease prevention and tooth abnormalities, periodontal conditions, dental hygiene techniques, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry and therapeutics. Critical clinical conditions and situations commonly presented by patients in the offices of general dental practitioners are simulated by way of computer-enhanced photographs, radiographs (x-rays), Optical images of study and working models, laboratory data and other clinical digitized reproductions. The CSCE provides an assessment of a person’s knowledge, skills and abilities to recognize and appropriately respond to clinical conditions and situations encountered commonly in the practice of dental hygiene.

Advantages

Assessments are continuously available nearly anywhere in the United States and Canada and can be retaken when the effort has been deemed unsuccessful, after reapplication and acceptance by the AADE.

· Security is enhanced since the physical shipping of testing materials is eliminated. Identification of individual users and electronic security is state of the art at Prometric Testing Centers.

· Individual users can spend as much or as little time as they wish on each item (within the total time limit for that section) and may return to items previously answered or skipped if they wish to change a response in that section.
